What to get?

We have going through so many different thoughts of what we want to use…..Class A….Bus Conversion…….minimize even smaller and go for a Class C?

A little back ground, when we moved from FL to OR in Sept ’07 we rented a Class A and took 3wks.  Big mistake when it comes to the time, it was too short and we felt way too rush to fully enjoy it.  But it gave us some general familiarity with Class A’s.

Honestly, driving that size scared the hell out of me (and that was without towing anything like we will be going full time)….didn’t help that the first time I got behind the wheel was just before a bridge in LA that keep going up and up and up and up……it was NUTS!  Torn looked down the side of the bridge and said “Wow, this is a high bridge”  He looks over to me and sees me death gripping the steering wheel, all white and telling him “Do NOT talk to me”  I’ve never driven a vehicle so wide or long.  Didn’t want to hit another car and didn’t want go over the edge….totally freaky.

When we were thinking of A’s, after an RV show, we really like the Alfa with all the storage space and set ups, even though they are no longer being made.  Well that got shot down when we found out that there are may be safety issues with them…that left us feeling lost, we had to start all over.

Now Torn does the majority of the surfing of RV sites and seeing what is out there.  So when trying to to figure out what next, he came across bus conversions.  There are a lot of pros with those.  The diesel engines are made to go 1 million miles, the steel frame, no slide outs to worry about mechanical issues, washer/dryer, nice size fridge, some even had dish washers.  But the cons, they are harder to find, harder within our budget without spending a bit to modernize, financing since most are sold by private owners not on a lot and a lot of national parks have length limits.  Of course, the length while towing our Jeep and the driving setup didn’t make me feel comfortable.

Also, even though we want our stuff and a moving “house”, part of the point of this is downsizing….simplifying…more manageable.  After discussing and debating with ourselves, we decided to keep an open mind and look at Class C’s.

Torn found a site of a couple who totally redid the inside of an old Class C and really opened our minds to it more: http://theroamingpint.com/about/who-is-stanley/ We really need be able to have a work area, that sounded like a good idea and that lead to more ideas.

We really were looking at old models that we can redo…but then there is the issue about time (trying to pack, store and leave within a month of getting it…not an easy, realistic task or a good way to start off), then there is the budgeting….no matter what you try and do, it will always cost more and then there is know how.

The more I looked at the budgeting, getting a newer one, with close to what we want/need, will save us headaches, frustrations, time, and out of pocket expenses.  Now Torn is usually the one pushing the budgets limits and I’m the one like, no, no…..so this was a turn of events and threw him for a small loop.

Now don’t get it wrong, it still has to be reasonably priced, but RVs that come out listed at 90k get marked down to 70k 6 months later, then the if you find one an older one by just 1-2 model years, you can get them at 50k.  We’d have better odds finding what we want/need at the price we can live with.

The things we are looking for, is most important where to put the litter and work area.  Then there is storage.  Some have nice closet space but not many.  The ones that do, normally have 2 slide outs, one in the bedroom and one in the living area.  I actually only want one of those even though I would totally love the closet space.  But with preferring a Class C with the bed and not the entertainment center, we can bag and store some of our clothes, towels, and blankets up there and still have room so the cats have more places to go.

The one we really like is the Thor Motor Coach Chateau 31K.  The 2012 are very nice, but we like the the more rounded seating of the 2013.  We also found a 2012 Fleetwood Tioga Ranger 28Z, really liked that set up.  But when we went to see it, they couldn’t get the power working and that person really didn’t seem to care.  One place that is not getting our business…which was disappointing, don’t like limiting our options.

As of now, it looks like it will be class C…….which one is the question, but we have ideas and that is a good start.

Where do we start? What to research?

We are in the researching phase of this part of the adventure.  No matter how much we wish we can be like others and just take a leap, it has never worked for us.  Even though we know that no matter how much we research and plan, it won’t go the way we want or think it will, at least we have basis to work off of.

Since this is going to be our blog about this new lifestyle of ours and will help organize my thoughts, I’m going to share the researching and planning part of it.  It also helps gives a feel of what we have learned, where we are coming from and hopefully help us on our journey.

We really need to make sure we have internet service, everywhere…..since that is how we make a living, but since we want parks and out of spot places, it is much harder to assure connection, unlike urban areas. So far it sounds like hughesnet…..but they go through dealers…it is so annoying to find actual info.  If we can just buy the equipment and then we can get service without contract and turn it on and off when we need it.

Of course, we will have and need other internet back up. I’m now looking at getting a sprint usb card and then we can use a plan from Millenicom.

After searching all the boards that Torn found, he found this awesome blog that really breaks it done in the simplest of terms.  It is a how to on the basic stuff, that when I asked on the boards I got so many different answers using jargon that I wasn’t familiar with that I left frustrated.  This blog has been a huge help for the tech side of it :  http://www.technomadia.com/

Many of the fulltimers that we found on the board seem to “domicile” or claim residence in a handful of states for tax purposes, but we’ve finally found a state that we very pleased and proud to claim and do not want to give up our Oregon residency and total love how we vote through mail.

Ater researching what I could on the state site, I call I found that it is very easy for us to update our driver license, using our current rental as proof of our Oregon residency, and become “Continuous Travelers” and use our PO Box on our DL.

Now I need to figure out the mail forwarding part….the USPS offers weekly forwarding, but changing the address on a weekly basis is not feasible.  So far it looks as if I’m going to have to it forward on weekly basis to another service that will hold it until we request it…..actually wondering if I can have my folks do that to cut down on the expense……but at this time, I’m working to go paperless as much as possible for bills.  And off course, all my magazines will be moved to online subscriptions.

We also have a TON of books.  I’m so totally addicted to history, biographies and politics.  But we got ipads this past holiday so I’ve gone thorough all the books we have that I haven’t read yet and put the ebook versions on my wish list.  I give myself a small budget every month to get a few of them.  Other then our Ansel Adams & bird guide books, I have gotten down to 4-6 books that I want to bring…..all history and Supreme Court stuff…..yes, I am a geek.

We are cat lovers and have had cats for years.  We have cat trees and other supplies that are used, but still good for others.  I called the Multnomah Animal Shelter to see if they can use them.  They can’t sanitize cat trees to use in the shelter, but they can give them to foster parents and other people who need supplies.  I was extremely pleased that they won’t be wasted…….one of our cat trees is HUGE and those are expensive, so that it can help someone else is great.  I hate waste and love helping others.

Now for being a fulltimer you can’t just use regular RV insurance, which is a form of vehicle insurance.  We need RV insurance that is also a homeowner insurance.  Found that State Farm does not offer that type of insurance. So I have to look into that.  I did stop by AAA Insurance today and found out that they do offer that.  I’m also going to check out GEICO and get some estimates.

Now I’ve been with State Farm since I married Torn, 15yrs ago May 31st and Torn has been with them since day one, since that is what his folks used…..so over 24yrs.  And we have had excellent service, when we have had to do a few claims, but we would rather all our insurance be with one company.  So I need to gather all our current insurance and the terms so I can ask for estimates and compare.

Writing this out helps me to clarify my thoughts and our goals….but it now time for bed.

What is this blog about?

This is the first actual post on this blog….not a test one.

As you can see, this is just rough idea of a set up for our blog.  Still have a long way to go and we do have time, so it’ll be getting changed.

We do want to get a logo designed.  We have some ideas, just need to find a designer that we want to work with it once we do the pic for the designer to work off of.

We like going and seeing parks, camping, hiking and seeing different parts of the country.  But we tired of the hassles of flying (TSA), leaving our cats and the comforts of our bed/home.

So about a year ago, Torn suggested about getting an RV and taking our cats, bed/home with us and become fulltimers.  Well, lets just say that the idea totally freaked me out…..and must admit, still scares the hell out of me…the cost of gas, camping fees, minimizing and storing our stuff. But the more I think about it, it does makes sense for us.  Torn is surprised that I would do this……but I have lived in small spaces and grew up as an Army Brat traveling.

So much to research, learn and prepare…..scarey and overwhelming.

But we did come up with this cool site time and picked it up last Oct.  =)  Still not sure of what we are doing with it, just know we want to use it for travels……seen tons of different types of full timers blogs, just need to find what fits for us.  I did get us a twitter account and started a facebook page for it….nothing there yet….lol
