Rock On!

We finally received the rock the park ordered 3+ weeks ago. The Rangers was kind enough to have it dumped right across from our Upper Loop Host site, so it was not a long drive to get a bucket full of rock like it was when we was at Fort Flagler.

However, I would have much rather have either one of the tractors Fort Flagler has over the one South Whidbey has. Its a powerful muscle, but it struggled to do the “fine tuning” I would like to have done better.

But it still got the job done.

I did the best I could do, but the tractor didn’t make it as easy as it could have. It’s older, and it felt like the controls were backwards compared to the other tractors I’ve used, but again, it got the job done.

I’m worn out and tired.

Settling In

It has been an off week. We have gone from volunteering at Ft Flagler State Park to South Whidbey State Park. Ended up spending last week getting ready for that and getting settled in that the off week has been affecting our dinner planning….been totally weak on it. Doing much better for this week.

So we are getting settled in and trying to learn our new duties and get a routine. It is different from what we were doing, but that is a good thing. I like it when we expand our horizons and learn new things. It comes in handy for the future.

At Ft Flagler, we were spent a lot of time cleaning up after wind storms and other jobs around the park. It was cool. We’ve missed doing yard work since we’ve moved to the Oregon in ’07. You get a good satisfaction when you get something cleaned up, because you get a result.

Here, we’ll be doing clean up after campers and doing more hosting duties. We’ve been learning the WA State program, Camis, for processing state fees, making sure that we are seen and are there for the visitors. We came over at a good time, it is letting us learn our new duties before the busy season hits. And we’ll be attacking some of the winter cleanup to get it ready for the busy season.

It is cozy here. When we got to Fl Flagler it was this huge open space….kind of freaky. But got use to it and was great for the satellite and sunlight. Got here and got the tree cover we love, that is what we’ve always looked for when we got tent camping…but not good for the satellite.

Still no satellite in our rig. =( BUT we have set it up in the garage by the office….so we didn’t miss our Pacer’s playoffs and Games of Thrones. =) We are going to get some more cable and see if we can get a signal. We are happy we at least have another option if we can’t do it in our home.

Next week, we’ll going to be get ourselves on to the some of the trails. Looking forward to that. =)

It’s time to yell at the tv…

The NBA Playoffs are here.

I am a long time, die hard, Indiana Pacers fan. I want to make sure they can hear me via the tv when I give them helpful advice, so I tend to speak somewhat loud at the tv during the game. It is currently game 4 at Atlanta and the #1 seed Pacers are down 2-1 to the #8 seed Atlanta Hawks and after being down 10 points in the 3rd, the Pacers made a comeback so I have been “giving advice” to the Pacers.

Today it is sunny and warm, we have the windows open, and there is a church group here at the park this weekend.

I must remember the windows are open…

Thursday, Pauline and I went to Troutdale to deal with our storage unit. It was holding the last remaining “house furniture” we owned. We wanted to give it a year before we tried to get rid of it, which is exactly what we did, however I kind of wish we tried to sell it off when we was still at the house.

While speaking to another volunteer he suggested trying a consignment store which is something we never thought of. That was the stress of keeping this storage unit, how will we do this? The only answer was to go down to the Portland area for a week or two and try and sell it on our own which is something we just did not want to do since it always came back to the “what if we can’t sell it?”.

We made advanced plans to have a mover suggested by the consignment shop, meet us at 12:30 pm at the storage unit. Pauline and I left here at 7am and arrived at the storage unit at 11am. We moved our King sized mattress to our other storage unit that has our personal items, rearranged that, and put some items into it while taking some items out while we waited.

12:30pm came and went with no phone call from the mover, we waited until 1pm before we started calling him, then we called the office and then we call the consignment shop who said they would try and contact him and let us know ASAP.

We started to do some other small errands that we had planned to do, but was worried that if we stopped at the greek restaurant that we loved, the mover would call and would when we placed our order and its on the other side of town. So we went to the pub next door to the storage unit where we have tried 2 other times but have yet to have a meal that was “good” or even decent. This time would be no different.

The mover finally called and told us he had a flat tire and would be 3 hours or so late… Had this call taken place 10 minutes earlier, I could have been eating a kick ass gyro and not terrible soup…

Ok, whatever, we still had errands to do, so we spent the next few hours going from store to store and then heading back to the storage unit that we waited another 45 minutes before the mover arrived. It took about 45 minutes for them to load everything so that meant we was about 15 minutes late for meeting a friend for dinner.

We met our friend, ate some decent food (At a place that usually was really good food), laughed, talked for a few hours before Pauline and I had to drive the 4 hours back home. We got home around 11:15pm and took time to shower and chill out some before we went to bed around 12:15am.

It was nice to see Troutdale, and the few changes we noticed, but over all, I am much happier living a nomadic lifestyle then a stationary one. We drove by our old house and noticed that the neighbor finally fixed his privacy fence, but other then that, our old house/neighborhood looked the same.

Pacers up 3 with 8.9 left…

PACERS WIN!

Today! Just 5 days later…

I really had planned to post these pictures the day we took them, but… you know… Stuff happens…

Pauline and I went to South Whidbey Island State Park to meet with a local volunteer, we got to look over our soon to be home a little better, we have 42′ of space and Ackbar is 35′ long.

Sweet!

Pauline and I are trying to get into the habit of taking a camera out when we do our park work, the iPhone just is not a good enough camera.

I’ll discuss this more in another post…

We came across 2 large Immature Bald Eagles on the beach on April 9, I got fairly close to them before one took off, and was able to get a few more pictures using Pauline’s “hiking camera” (Pentax point and shoot) I thought I had it zoomed in all the way, but when I realized I didn’t, the last of the birds flew off, hence the blurry pics…

Dinner time, more later…

Pima Air & Space Museum, Tucson, AZ

Pauline and I had some errands to do in Tucson so we decided to make a day of it and visit the Pima Air & Space Museum and Saguaro National Park East unit.

We arrived at the Pima Air & Space Museum around 9:30am and we immediately knew we did not plan the day out too well. We was both hungry as hell, so we had to start our day at the diner. We was the first customers of the day, and while it took a bit longer then we expected to get our food, the food was really good and well worth the wait.

Pauline for the grilled Ham and Cheese and I got the Cheeseburger with American cheese and we shared a side of fries. We give it 4 of 5 stars. Typical diner food, but done well. We would for sure eat there again.

We also did not wear the proper foot wear. We both decided to wear tennis shoes, but hiking boots would have been the better choice, since this place is MASSIVE in size. We tried to take pictures of everything we saw, but there was just too many Airplanes. We was going to take the bus tour of the “Bone yard” but we decided we can do that on our next visit, there is just too much to see in one visit.

We spoke to many of the volunteers while there and discovered one was Purdue Alum and many were Veterans of World War II.

We had a great visit, but again, one day is not long enough to see everything. We walked a fast pace and it still took hours.

The B36 here was in amazing condition. And We was told it is 1 of 4 left in the world. We saw another one in Atwater, CA in April, so we have seen 1/2 of the B36’s left.

The volunteers also told us they are working on getting the needed funding to build a new massive hanger for “Cold War” aircraft, so the B36, B47, B58, B52 and others.

This would have to be a HUGE hanger to fit all these birds.

The aircraft with yellow wings are trainers.

The B29 had lots of items that was used in battle along with pictures and personal items of the crew.

This was the best Air Museum I have ever been to. The Space Museum was small but nice for what they have.

Seeing 2 references to the USS America CV-66 was a very nice surprise. May she rest in peace.
