As I was taking my morning walk yesterday I noticed 3 Turkey Vultures in the grass, so I knew there had to be a food source. I walked over and verified it was a deer, mostly likely a fawn. It was pretty well picked clean at this point as most of the meat was gone, but since Pauline walked the same area the night before and saw no Turkey Vultures, and it was still “juicy”, we know it was a fresh kill.
The theory is a pack of Coyotes. We did just see three of them a few days prior. Possibly a Mountain Lion, but the carcass was left in the open, and typical Mountain Lion behavior would be dragging the carcass to a covered tree area and bury part of it for saving for later, none of which was done. But the carcass was too far gone to get anything informative from it.
I came across the deer in a wide open grassy area, she did not move at all, her ears flickered once, she looked more like a statue then a deer. I walked from her far right side to her far left, as close as 30′ and she still didn’t move. I think she was thinking she was invisible as long as she didn’t move.
I think I want some of whatever she is eating or smoking.
As I was walking the Creek Trail where I normally run into Pauline who is doing her morning walk, I spotted a Javilina on the trail which was between Pauline and I. The Javilina was watching Pauline with no idea I was even there, as he turned to run away from her he got within 15′ of me when he noticed me and took off running into the woods.
We had our first Summer storm pass just a few miles NE from us. We saw lightning and heard thunder, which the cats HATE to hear, but over all it fizzled out. Maybe the next one will be a real good one?
This mornings walk was low key, I saw a few deer, and after walking a few miles I saw a Javilina at the far end of the Preserve, so I walked around the trails to come up behind it, I was able to determine it has a hurt hind leg. It was limping pretty noticeably.
We currently have two visitors out on the trail, but visitors have dropped off big time with the higher temps. We are getting 2-3 a day now if that. We are expecting a small group of 12 today or tomorrow, they are doing something with invasive plants.
We will be sweeping some dirt areas around the preserve trying to find some fresh tracks. We have multiple places off the trails we can do this at and it’s easier to do it when you don’t have to worry about guest walking over them.
I added about 40 more Header images yesterday. I will add more as time goes by. We are still not happy with this blog, it’s lacking a personality and I can not seem to make any changes that will give it some life.
It is a work in progress.
