This is now being fought in the highest court in the land and this will also tell us exactly how right sided this court is, since the Bush administration is giving vocal support to the principle, big shock I know.
I have serious issues with this whole incident. It did not happen on school grounds, it was not a school event so where does this principle get off thinking she is in charge of what a 17 year does who is not her child?
I know this kid is a punk, but so what, he has every right in the world to post a banner that says “bong hits for jesusâ€, well at least I think he has the right, I guess we will soon find out.
This reminds me of a story, I came home from boot camp and talking to a mutual friend who was still in high school and she was telling me about a guy who was currently a senior and one of those “less then stellar†students, so the principles and VP rode him hard at times. One day he had a doctors appointment and after he left the Dr’s office he got into his car, and rolled the window down and lit a cigarette when someone reached in, grabbed his pack and cigarette from his mouth and he looks up and he sees the schools VP/AD who told him to go straight back to school and report to his office.
This Dr’s office is 14 MILES from school.
This kid is 18 years of age.
This was in no way a school sponsored event.
He was excused to be at the Dr’s office.
So this kid did as he was told (he was/is “slowâ€) and got detentions for a week and had he not gone to our mutual friends house that night and told the story to her parents, this would have been the end of it.
But my friend’s parents are lawyers and they told this kid he was just assaulted and needs to report this, so after speaking to his own parents he called the police and reported the incident and they charged the VP/AD with assault and petty theft.
I do believe something was worked out, and all charges were dropped and of course the kid got no detention or anything else and from what I was told, everyone laid off this kid so he had a better final year in school then the first 3 years were.
And from I what I was told, the VP/AD really toned down the attitude and chip on his shoulder, he was such a “Principal Richard Vernon†wannabe, he would treat the athletes like gods and us non athletes like shit. In fact my freshmen year I stood up to a “monster sized†senior who literally picked me up by my neck and was choking me out since I didn’t back down from his BS, and the VP/AD walked in and saw it all and all he said “Now, put him down, it’s too much paperwork†I was angry about that for a long time, my face was purple and he gets a “now be nice†speech?
But as I said this VP/AD calmed down and we was actually sitting next to him on a plane trip to Miami years ago and I was polite and shook his hand etc.
Time heals all wounds?
Maybe…
But I still have a huge issue with my JR High school principle… I’d so kick that fucker’s ass if I ever got in the same room with him.
That is another story.
Anyway, back on subject, I really expect the court to side with the Principle, but I want to see their comments on it, which I’m willing to bet will be full of shit and it will have a lot of words used, but say nothing.
One day we will have a administration in office who can read what the First Amendment says and actually understand it.
One day….
